Assets of Securitisers

At 30 September 2016, total assets of Australian securitisers were $118.5b, down $4.8b (3.9%) on 30 June 2016.

During the September quarter 2016, the decrease in total assets was due to a decrease in residential mortgage assets (down $3.4b, 3.4%), other loans (down $0.8b, 4.9%) and; cash and deposits (down $0.3b, 7.0%).

Liabilities of Securitisers

At 30 September 2016, total liabilities of Australian securitisers were $118.5b, down $4.8b (3.9%) on 30 June 2016. The decrease in total liabilities was due to a decrease in long term asset backed securities issued (down $3.7b, 3.5%), asset backed securities issued overseas (down $1.06b, 17.7%), and loan and placements (down $0.3b, 3.0%).


CHANGE IN LEVEL OF ASSET BACKED SECURITIES, from previous quarter


At 30 September 2016, asset backed securities issued overseas as a proportion of total liabilities decreased to 3.8%, down 0.6% on the June quarter 2016 proportion of 4.4%. Asset backed securities issued in Australia as a proportion of total liabilities increased to 87.2%, up 0.4% on the June quarter 2016 proportion of 86.8%.

PROPOSED DATE CHANGES

The ABS proposes to move the release date of Securitisers from the December 2016 quarter onwards to align closer to the release of Australian National Accounts: Finance and Wealth (cat. no. 5232.0). Dependant on feedback, future release dates will be three weeks prior to the release of Australian National Accounts: Finance and Wealth, with the exception of September quarters which will be released two weeks prior. The proposed new date for the December 2016 quarter release is 9 March 2017. The ABS invites any feedback on this change to be sent to financial.statistics@abs.gov.au.


REVISIONS

In this issue revisions have been made to the original series as a result of the receipt of revised survey data. These revisions have impacted the assets and liabilities reported back to and including the September 2008 quarter. Revisions to securitisers assets and liabilities were also published in the June quarter 2016 release of Australian National Accounts: Finance and Wealth (cat. 5232.0).
