SELF-ASSESSED HEALTH STATUS
1 Crossley and Kennedy (2000) assessed the reliability of self-assessed health status by examining data from the 1995 National Health Survey. Here, a subsample of participants self-completed the SF1 once before a set of health related questions. The entire sample of participants was then asked the SF1 in a personal interview after the set of health questions. Of the subsample of participants who completed both SF1 questions, 28% changed their response from that previously given. The response change was mainly from those who first reported their health as good, but on the second occasion reported that their health was either very good or fair. Overall, proportions of those reporting excellent, very good, good, fair and poor health did not change more than 5% between the two question methods.
