In 2014-15 there were 384.6 million hectares of land owned or operated by 123,000 agricultural businesses in Australia. These estimates represent a 21.7 million hectare, or 5.3%, reduction in land area and a 5,400, or 4.2%, reduction in the number of agricultural businesses when compared to the 2013-14 estimates.
Of the 384.6 million hectares of land owned or operated by agricultural businesses in Australia, 316.7 million hectares, or 82%, were used for grazing. Queensland was the largest contributor to this area, with an estimated 118.7 million hectares of land used for grazing in 2014-15.
The area of improved pastures reported in Australia decreased by 12.4 million hectares, or 25%, to 36.8 million hectares in 2014-15.
The area of land used for crops in Australia decreased by 910,000 hectares, or 2.8%, to 31.4 million hectares in 2014-15. The largest decrease occurred in South Australia, which was down by 258,000 hectares, or 5.2% in 2014-15. In contrast, Tasmania reported a 5,000 hectare or 3.9% increase in land used for crops.
