INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS
The statistics in this publication are derived from administrative systems maintained by state and territory police. The 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 data have been collected on a comparable basis in accordance with the National Crime Recording Standard (NCRS). While national standards and classifications are used, differences over time in the level of recorded crime may reflect factors other than a change in the incidence of crime. Details of differences that may impact on the statistics are in the Explanatory Notes paragraphs 7–21 and 58–80.
CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE
Victimisation rates in this publication have been calculated using final rebased Estimated Resident Population (ERP) data based on the 2011 Census of Population and Housing. Similarly, victimisation rates for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population are calculated using ERP data based on the 2011 Census of Population and Housing. Victimisation rates for the reference periods 2010, 2011 and 2012 have been recalculated on a consistent basis with victimisation rates for the 2013 reference period. As these revisions also impact on the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victimisation rates, a supplementary data cube, Victims of Crime, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status, revised ERP – tables 30 to 35, has been included in the publication for this issue only. Changes from the 2012 publication also include a consolidation of state/territory data into single tables, removal of duplicated data, and a reorganisation of publication tables into thematic data cubes. The number of data cubes has been reduced from 13 to 5 and the tables have been reduced from 77 to 27. However, there has been no loss of published data due to these changes. These changes were implemented to improve the ease of navigation and readability for users. A complete table concordance between the 2012 published tables and the tables published in the current release is available in the Downloads tab.
ROUNDING
Discrepancies may occur between sums of component items and totals across tables due to rounding and randomisation applied to protect the confidentiality of individuals. For more information see Explanatory Notes paragraph 29.
