ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION
This publication provides estimates of the quantity of beer, wine and spirits available for consumption for the years 1996-97 to 2002-03. It also includes an estimate of the apparent consumption of these products by persons aged 15 years and over.
KEY POINTS
The quantity of pure alcohol available for consumption increased 9.6% from 141.6 million litres in 1996-97 to 155.2 million litres in 2002-03. The apparent per person consumption of pure alcohol by persons 15 years and over rose from 9.77 litres in 1996-97 to 9.84 litres in 2002-03, a 1% increase (table 3). This was due to an increase in the consumption of alcohol in the form of wine and spirits (10% and 9% respectively). Apparent consumption per person of alcohol in beer decreased by 7% over the same period.
The quantity of beer available for consumption increased from 1,760 million litres in 1996-97 to 1,809 million litres in 2002-03, a 3% increase. However, a 9% increase in the number of people 15 years and over during this period, led to a decrease in the apparent per person consumption of beer, by that group, of 6% from 121.4 litres in 1996-97 to 114.7 litres in 2002-03 (table 1). The quantity of wine available for consumption rose from 349.7 million litres in 1996-97 to 423.8 million litres in 2002-03, a 21% increase, with the apparent per person consumption of wine by people 15 years and over increasing by 11.6% from 24.1 litres to 26.9 litres (table 2).
