ABOUT THIS RELEASE

The GSS 2002 CURF is available either on CD-ROM or through the RADL

A Basic confidentialised unit record file from the 2002 General Social Survey, which brings together a wide range of information to enable it to be linked in ways not previously available. This is the first major survey which focuses on the relationships between characteristics from different areas of social concern,
rather than in depth information about a particular field. Topics include health, housing, education, work, income, financial stress, broad assets and liabilities, information technology, transport, family and community, crime, attendance at selected sport, culture and leisure venues and participation in sport and
recreational activities.

Users are able to manipulate the data, produce tabulations and undertake statistical analysis to their individual specifications. The data contain no names and addresses or any other information that might uniquely identify an individual. The data provided have less detail than was collected, a small
number of unusual records removed, and the details changed for some items of data to protect confidentiality.

The Expanded GSS 2006 CURF is available only through the Remote Access Data Laboratory (RADL)

An Expanded Confidentialised Unit Record File (CURF) from the 2006 General Social Survey, a multi-dimensional social survey that ranges across many aspects of life, designed to enable analysis of the interrelationships in social circumstances and outcomes, including the exploration of multiple advantage and disadvantage. The data provides information on people's health, family relationships, social and community involvement, education, employment, income and financial stress, assets and liabilities, housing and mobility, crime and safety, transport, attendance at culture and leisure venues, and sports attendance and participation.

The file is only available through the Remote Access Data Laboratory (RADL) and contains more variables than the basic file, as well as more detailed data for selected variables. Users are able to run STATA, SAS and/or SPSS data queries against the Basic and Expanded CURFs to which they have approved access in the RADL. A User Guide explaining data content, technical details and conditions of use is provided with the file.
