PERSPECTIVES ON MIGRANTS, 2011
The sixth edition in the series Perspectives on Migrants (cat. no. 3416.0) was released on December, 2011. This series provides informed commentary on issues and debates relating to migrants, ethnicity and migration programs that are common place within the Australian political and media landscape.
The sixth edition contains two descriptive articles that investigate the socio-economic characteristics of recently arrived migrants and the relationship between migrants and rates of disability:
- The Characteristics of Recent Migrants article presents a broad range of national level statistics from Characteristics of Recent Migrants, Australia, Nov 2010 (cat. no. 6250.0) about the countries of birth, broad visa groups, labour force status, occupations and educational attainment of migrants. The article then analyses many of these characteristics of recent migrants in the context of the five largest states: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. State level data on recent migrants is also presented from reports published by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) and some commentary is included for capital cities from a report entitled 'Population Distribution Effects of Migration in Australia'.
- Migrants and Disability examines the relationship between migrants and rates of disability in Australia. It begins by presenting and comparing data from Australian Demography Statistics (Australian Demographic Statistics, Mar 2011 cat. no. 3101.0 and Migration, Australia, 2009-10 cat. no. 3412.0) and data collected from the Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers (Disability, Australia, 2009 cat. no. 4446.0 and Disability, Ageing and Carers, Australia: Summary of Findings, 2009 cat. no. 4430.0) to highlight the increase in the numbers of migrants coming to Australia over the 1998 to 2009 period at National and State level. The age structures of all migrants, recent migrants and the total Australian population are analysed in the context of rates of disability. The article then analyses the extent to which recent migrants have impacted upon the total rate of disability in Australia and rates of disability for migrants.
