QUALITY MANAGEMENT OF STATISTICAL OUTPUTS PRODUCED FROM ADMINISTRATIVE DATA
The information paper, Quality Management of Statistical Outputs Produced from Administrative Data (cat. no. 1522.0) was released on 22 March 2011. The paper covers the major uses of administrative data and highlights some common issues with the acquisition of administrative data. Although processing issues are not covered, a future paper shall do so.
As the nation's official statistical agency, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is committed to leading a high quality statistical service to assist and encourage informed decision making. Part of this role involves finding new and improved ways to acquire relevant information whilst reducing respondent burden, maximising available data and rendering more efficient the use of taxpayer money. One of the methods used to meet these goals is the use of information collected for non-statistical purposes (e.g. administrative data). Sources for such data include:
- registration of births, deaths and marriages
- customs data (e.g. import and export records)
- taxation data
- financial data (e.g. automatic teller machine transactions)
- social security benefit applications
- school enrolments
- hospital records
