2011 CENSUS DATA RELEASE

The ABS held its five yearly Census of Population and Housing on Tuesday 9 August 2011. This marked one hundred years of Census taking in Australia and uniquely included the same set of questions asked in the 2006 Census.

Data from the Census will progressively be released from June 2012. The products from the Census have been completely revamped to make it even easier for users to access the data they need. The range of data that will be made available as standard Census output will also be expanded.

In the main, data from the 2011 Census will be released free of charge on the ABS website through QuickStats, Community Profiles and TableBuilder Basic.

    • QuickStats provides a simple at-a-glance summary of Census statistics for a selected area including data on people, their families and the dwellings in which they live. The QuickStats pages will incorporate tables, graphs and text.
    • Community Profiles provide detailed Census data for a selected area in a series of tables in Excel format. The Time Series Profile enables comparison of data from the 2001, 2006 and 2011 Censuses.
    • TableBuilder Basic allows users to create their own tables of Census data and to view graphs and maps for a range of regions. This replaces CDATA Online and is designed for users with some experience using Census data.
For those with more complex data needs, TableBuilder Pro allows users to build and customise their own tables with the full 2011 Census dataset. It provides access to nearly all Census variables and supports a huge variety of cross-tabulations. TableBuilder Pro is a charged product and will be made available on the ABS website via an interactive, easy to use interface. This replaces Census TableBuilder.

Core demographic data items will be available in the first data release on 21 June 2012, while items that require more detailed processing will be released as part of the second release on 30 October 2012. Highly specialised products, such as the Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA) and the Census Sample Files, will be released from 28 March 2013.

Data items that may be of interest to users of migrant statistics include ancestry, country of birth, year of arrival in Australia, Australian citizenship, language spoken at home, proficiency in spoken English and religious affiliation. These data items, when used in conjunction with other Census information, provide a rich variety of information in the context of migrant settlement outcomes.

More information on the 2011 Census product range and release schedule is available in the Information Paper: Census of Population and Housing - Products and Services (cat. no. 2011.0.55.001) on the ABS website www.abs.gov.au/census.

Public consultation for 2016 Census topics will commence later this year. An information paper with more details about the submission process will be available from the website at that time.
