SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS TO AUSTRALIA
  • Trend estimates: Short-term visitor arrivals during March 2013 (529,100 movements) increased 0.1% compared with February 2013 (528,700 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.2% in January 2013 and 0.1% in February 2013. The current trend estimate for arrivals is 5.0% higher than in March 2012.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During March 2013, short-term visitor arrivals (533,600 movements) recorded an increase of 2.3% compared with February 2013 (521,800 movements). This followed monthly decreases of 2.4% in January 2013 and 0.6% in February 2013.
  • Original estimates: There were 588,500 short-term visitor arrivals to Australia in March 2013.


SHORT-TERM RESIDENT DEPARTURES FROM AUSTRALIA
  • Trend estimates: Short-term resident departures during March 2013 (696,700 movements) increased 0.2% compared with February 2013 (694,900 movements). This follows monthly increases of 0.3% in both January 2013 and February 2013. The current trend estimate for departures is 3.5% higher than in March 2012.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During March 2013, short-term resident departures (707,100 movements) increased 3.0% compared with February 2013 (686,800 movements). This followed monthly decreases of 1.4% in January 2013 and 0.1% in February 2013.
  • Original estimates: There were 682,900 short-term resident departures from Australia during March 2013.

UPCOMING RELEASE

January 2013 overseas arrivals and departures data will be revised in next month's release of this publication. Investigations by the ABS and DIAC uncovered a high non-response rate for both duration of stay and reason for journey for the month of January. This is mainly due to changes to the collection and processing of passenger cards, which were introduced in January. January is the only month that has been affected and the non-response rates for subsequent months are at an acceptable level.
