DECEMBER KEY POINTS


SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS TO AUSTRALIA
  • Trend estimates: Short-term visitor arrivals during December 2012 (534,000 movements) increased 0.7% compared with November 2012 (530,100 movements). This followed monthly increases of 1.1% in October and 1.0% in November 2012. The current trend estimate for arrivals is 6.9% higher than in December 2011.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During December 2012, short-term visitor arrivals (537,600 movements) recorded an increase of 1.6% compared with November 2012 (529,200 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.4% in October and 0.9% in November 2012.
  • Original estimates: There were 720,900 short-term visitor arrivals to Australia in December 2012.


SHORT-TERM RESIDENT DEPARTURES FROM AUSTRALIA
  • Trend estimates: Short-term resident departures during December 2012 (692,100 movements) increased 0.3% compared with November 2012 (690,300 movements). This follows monthly increases of 0.2% in October and 0.3% in November 2012. The current trend estimate for departures is 5.3% higher than in December 2011.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During December 2012, short-term resident departures (695,500 movements) increased 0.1 % compared with November 2012 (695,000 movements). This followed a monthly decrease of 1.9% in October 2012 and a monthly increase of 2.3% in November 2012.
  • Original estimates: There were 908,600 short-term resident departures from Australia during December 2012.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

The large increase in the original estimates for short-term visitor arrivals from India has caused some uncertainty in the trend estimates from December 2012. A longer time series of data is required before the effects of changes in travel behaviour to Australia from India, and hence the final trend for this series, can be determined. This uncertainty is therefore also present in the regional total series (e.g. Total Southern and Central Asia) and the total series.
