DECEMBER KEY POINTS


TREND ESTIMATES

  • Trend estimates for short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during December 2007 (470,900 movements) changed little compared with November 2007 (470,200 movements).
  • Currently, short-term visitor arrivals are 0.4% higher than when the series last troughed in August 2007 and 0.2% lower than in December 2006.
  • During December 2007, short-term resident departures (478,000 movements) increased by 0.8% compared with November 2007 (474,300 movements). This followed monthly increases of 1.0% for October 2007 and 0.9% for November 2007.
  • Currently, short-term resident departures are 12.9% higher than in December 2006.


SEASONALLY ADJUSTED ESTIMATES
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates for short-term visitor arrivals during December 2007 (470,000 movements) decreased by 0.8% compared with November 2007 (473,800 movements). This followed a monthly decrease of 2.9% for October 2007 and a monthly increase of 2.4% for November 2007.
  • Short-term resident departures for December 2007 (485,600 movements) increased 3.4% compared with November 2007 (469,800 movements). This followed a monthly increase of 2.9% for October 2007 and a monthly decrease of 0.8% for November 2007.


ORIGINAL ESTIMATES
  • In original movement terms, there were 615,000 short-term visitor arrivals to Australia and 633,400 short-term resident departures from Australia during December 2007.
