BIRTHS AND CONFINEMENTS

In 2002, there were 46,934 confinements resulting in 47,771 live births registered to mothers usually resident in Queensland. There were 24,454 male births and 23,317 female births, giving a sex ratio of 104.9 males per 100 females. Queensland's crude birth rate of 12.9 births per 1,000 population was slightly higher than the rate for Australia as a whole (12.8).

The total fertility rate (the average number of babies a female would bear during her lifetime if she experienced current age-specific fertility rates) was 1.77 babies per woman in 2002.

The median age of Queensland mothers for all confinements was 29.5 years compared with 30.2 years for all Australia.

Exnuptial confinements represented 37% of all confinements registered in Queensland in 2002, a substantially greater proportion than the 28% of all confinements registered as exnuptial in 1992.

In 2002, there were 817 sets of twins and higher order births registered, which means one in every 57 confinements resulted in a multiple birth in Queensland. This is an increase in multiple births from 1992 where one in every 75 confinements resulted in a multiple birth.
