KEY POINTS AT 30 JUNE 2015
  • Greater Darwin was the only capital city where males outnumbered females.
  • The SA2s with the highest sex ratios were predominately mining areas in regional Western Australia (including East Pilbara, Roebourne and Ashburton), and areas which contained prisons (including Casuarina - Wellard (East) in Western Australia).
  • The SA2s with the lowest sex ratios included the Canberra suburbs of Deakin and Page, Coombabah on the Gold Coast and Palmerston - South in Greater Darwin.
  • Greater Hobart had the oldest population of all Australian capital cities, while Greater Darwin had the youngest.
  • The SA2s with the oldest median ages were coastal areas, including Tea Gardens - Hawks Nest near Port Stephens in New South Wales, Bribie Island in Queensland, Paynesville in Victoria's Gippsland region, and Victor Harbor on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula.
  • Many of the SA2s with the youngest median ages also had high proportions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (including Yarrabah and Northern Peninsula in Queensland, and Thamarrurr in the Northern Territory) or large student populations (Acton in Canberra and St Lucia in Brisbane).
