EXPLANATORY NOTES
INTRODUCTION
1 This publication presents selected estimates from the ABS collections: Wine and Spirit Production, 2007-08 and Wine Statistics, 2007-08. More information compiled from these collections will be available in Australian Wine and Grape Industry (ABS cat. no. 1329.0), due to be released in late November 2008.
SCOPE AND COVERAGE OF WINE SURVEYS
2 Through the Wine and Spirit Production Survey and the Wine Statistics Survey the ABS collects grape crush information from nearly 400 wineries which crushed 50 tonnes of grapes or more in the 2007-08 financial year. Wineries crushing less than this amount are not included in estimates but are expected to contribute less than 1.5% to the total crush.
3 Winemakers who crush more than 400 tonnes of grapes are included in the Wine and Spirit Production Survey. Wine production data are collected from these winemakers on a winery (location) basis to allow for state and regional data output. The grapes crushed by these wineries includes grapes owned by others and crushed on a commission or contract basis, often for wine producers who do not have their own crushing facilities. These wineries account for approximately 98% of total crushings by all winemakers crushing 50 or more tonnes of fresh grapes.
4 Limited information on the quantity of grapes crushed and domestic wine sales are also obtained from wineries crushing between 50 and 400 tonnes. These data are collected on a winery (location) basis in the Wine Statistics Survey. The main purpose for this supplementary collection is to establish the scope and coverage of both the main production collection and the monthly wine sales collection. Wine production figures for these wineries are estimated from their crush data.
