The National Localities Index provides Statistical Local Area (SLA) codes for over 32,000 Australian localities. It can be used to assign SLA, Statistical Subdivision, Statistical Division and State/Territory codes as defined in the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) 1216.0. The index is updated with each new edition of the ASGC. A streets sub-index enables accurate coding for addresses in localities that straddle SLA boundaries.
THE NATIONAL LOCALITIES INDEX WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE BEYOND ASGC 2007
The National Localities Index (NLI) will not be available beyond the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) 2007. The final edition of the NLI was released in July 2007, it was current up until 30 June 2008.
The NLI will be replaced by the 'Locality to SLA 2008 Concordance' which is a list of State, Locality and Postcode combinations that can be used to determine an ASGC 2008 Statistical Local Area ( SLA) code. This list has been derived from various geographic information sources.
The locality list comprises 15,301 gazetted localities whose spatial extent is accurately defined and a further 3,952 localities whose spatial extent has been approximated from the best available knowledge.
