PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN NON-REMOTE AREAS

In 2012-13, the collection of physical activity data in non-remote areas of the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (AATSIHS) was via three separate question modules across the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nutrition Physical Activity Survey (NATSINPAS) and National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (NATSIHS). These modules were:

  • Adult physical activity
  • Child 5-17 years physical activity
  • Child 2-4 years physical activity (NATSINPAS only)

For details on remote physical activity, see the Physical activity in remote areas chapter of this Users’ Guide.

For adults 18 years and over, physical activity included the collection of data, with a reference period of the last week, of time spent and frequency of:
  • walking for transport
  • walking for fitness, recreation or sport
  • moderate physical activity/exercise
  • vigorous physical activity/exercise.

In addition, NATSIHS collected data on usual physical activity at work.

Additional NATSINPAS data collected for adults, again with a reference period of the last week, included:
  • time spent and frequency of vigorous gardening
  • type of moderate/vigorous physical activity (and whether organised)
  • time spent and frequency of strength and toning activity
  • type of transport used.

For children 5-17 years, physical activity included the collection of data, on each day in the 3 days prior to interview, regarding:
  • type and time spent on active transport (to and from school, to and from other places)
  • type and time spent on moderate/vigorous physical activity.

In addition, NATSINPAS collected data on time spent on organised moderate/vigorous physical activity.

For children 2-4 years, physical activity included the collection of data, on each day in the 3 days prior to interview, regarding time spent on:
  • indoor physical activity
  • outdoor physical activity.
