NEW SOUTH WALES
Second largest increase in households
Over the next 25 years, New South Wales is projected to experience the second largest increase in numbers of households of the states and territories, increasing by between 943,400 and 1.0 million households to reach between 3.5 and 3.6 million households by 2031. In percentage terms, this growth is slower than Australia's overall household growth (of between 47% and 52%), reflecting the lower population growth projected for New South Wales (29%) compared to Australia overall (39%) for the period 2006 to 2031.
Of the three household types, family households, which made up 73% of all households in New South Wales in 2006, are projected to experience the largest numeric increase, up by between 579,200 and 602,900 households to reach between 2.4 and 2.5 million households by 2031. This corresponds to an increase of between 31% and 33% over the period.
The fastest growing household type in New South Wales, as in all other states and territories, is projected to be lone person households, increasing by between 52% and 75% (or 319,000 to 457,400 households). Female lone person households are projected to increase by between 62% and 66% from 333,800 in 2006 to between 540,500 and 555,200 in 2031, while male lone person households are projected to increase by between 41% and 86% from 275,700 in 2006 to between 388,000 and 511,700 in 2031. As a result, lone person households are projected to increase from around one-quarter (24%) of all households in New South Wales in 2006 to between 27% and 30% in 2031.

Average household size
The average size of households in New South Wales is projected to gradually decline over the next 25 years, from 2.6 people per household in 2006 to between 2.4 and 2.5 people per household in 2031. This decline is the same as that projected for Australia.
Growth in number of families
The number of families in New South Wales is projected to increase by between 31% and 33%, from 1.9 million families in 2006 to 2.5 million families in 2031. National growth, in comparison, is projected to be between 40% and 43%.
Couple families without children are projected to experience the fastest growth of families in New South Wales, increasing by between 45% (Series I) and 64% (Series III) to reach between 987,500 and 1.1 million families in 2031 (from 678,700 in 2006). As a result, the number of couple families
without children is projected to exceed the number of couple families
with children from 2019 (Series II) or 2016 (Series III) onwards.
One-parent families are projected to increase by between 31% (Series I) and 63% (Series III) by 2031. This increase will result in one-parent families accounting for the same or slightly higher proportion of families in New South Wales in 2031 (between 16% and 20%) as they did in 2006 (16%).
The smallest rate of change is projected to occur for couple families with children, increasing in two of the three series by between 13% (Series II) and 23% (Series I), while in Series III the number is projected to decrease by 5%. Numbers of couple families with children are therefore projected to reach between 826,300 and 1.1 million by 2031, from 868,200 in 2006.
