PREVALENCE OF VIOLENCE SINCE THE AGE OF 15 - RELATIONSHIP TO PERPETRATOR BY SEX OF PERPETRATOR

Table B (below) provides a summary of men's and women's experience of violence by a male and female perpetrator since the age of 15 by broad perpetrator type grouping (stranger and/or known person). The information within this table is from Tables 4 and 6 which can be accessed via the Data Cubes in the Downloads Tab.

(a) Where a person has experienced violence by both a stranger and known person, they are counted separately for each perpetrator type but are only counted once in the aggregated total.
(b) Where a person has experienced violence by both male and female perpetrators, they are counted separately for each perpetrator type but are only counted once in the aggregated total.


Men's experience of violence since the age of 15 by sex of perpetrator

Men aged 18 years and over were more likely to have experienced violence since the age of 15 by a male perpetrator than by a female perpetrator (Refer to Table 6).

Men aged 18 years and over who experienced violence by a stranger were more likely to have experienced violence by a male stranger than a female stranger.
  • An estimated 2,978,800 men had experienced violence by a male stranger (35% of all men); and
  • An estimated 307,900 men had experienced violence by a female stranger (3.6% of all men).

Men aged 18 years and over who experienced violence by a known person were more likely to have experienced violence by a known male than a known female.
  • An estimated 1,816,000 men had experienced violence by a known male (22% of all men ); and
  • An estimated 933,900 men had experienced violence by a known female (11% of all men).
Women's experience of violence since the age of 15 by sex of perpetrator

Women aged 18 years and over were also more likely to have experienced violence since the age of 15 by a male perpetrator than by a female perpetrator (Refer to Table 6).

Women aged 18 years and over who experienced violence by a stranger were more likely to have experienced violence by a male stranger than a female stranger.
  • An estimated 903,700 women had experienced violence by a male stranger (10% of all women); and
  • An estimated 275,300 women had experienced violence by a female stranger (3.2% of all women).

Women aged 18 years and over who experienced violence by a known person were more likely to have experienced violence by a known male than a known female.
  • An estimated 2,943,200 women had experienced violence by a known male (34% of all women); and
  • An estimated 654,100 women had experienced violence by a known female (7.5% of all women).
