WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Second fastest household growth
The number of households in Western Australia is projected to increase from 776,300 in 2006 to 1.3 million in 2031, an increase of between 66% and 71%, making it the second fastest growing state in terms of households, behind only Queensland. This is a reflection of the high population growth projected for Western Australia (57%) between 2006 and 2031. The growth in the number of Western Australian households is projected to contribute 14% to the growth in households nationwide, adding between 551,900 and 548,300 households and making Western Australia the fourth largest contributor behind New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.
The fast household growth in Western Australia is partly attributable to fast growth in lone person households. These are projected to increase by between 84% and 123% (considerably higher than the growth projected for Australia of between 63% and 91%), or 156,900 to 229,600 households. This is an increase from 186,600 households in 2006 to between 343,500 and 416,100 in 2031. The number of female lone person households is projected to increase from 96,700 in 2006 to between 191,900 and 207,600 in 2031, representing an increase of between 98% and 115%, while the number of male lone person households is projected to increase from 89,800 to between 151,600 and 208,500, representing an increase of between 69% and 132%.
