OVERVIEW
As part of the WA State Supplementary Programme, a survey on Household Safety Devices was scheduled for October 1996. The survey was statewide (3,500 households) either by telephone or face-to-face interview. Safety devices of interest included smoke detectors; child resistant or lockable cupboards; support rails; hot water system thermostats and electrical safety switches.
PURPOSE
The survey aimed to provide data to develop State government policy and strategies to prevent and control home injury (particularly to children), and to monitor the effectiveness of recent specific prevention programmes.
SCOPE
WA civilian population aged 15 and over (in private dwellings only)
Coverage: Standard Labour Force coverage rules.
The following are exclusions on coverage for the labour force:
- visitors to the household
- members of the permanent defence forces;
- certain diplomatic personnel of overseas governments, customarily excluded from census and estimated populations;
- overseas residents in Australia; and
- members of non-Australian defence forces (and their dependants) stationed in Australia.

Conceptual framework
The collection was conducted as a supplement to the ABS Monthly Population Survey (MPS) in October 1996. Information was collected from household in private dwellings throughout Western Australia.
Information was collected from over 3,500 households in WA by either face-to-face or telephone interview. All data relate to households and where an opinion was sought the answer in regarded as the opinion of the household. The specific Household Safety Devices of interest were:
- Smoke detectors
- Child resistant lockable cabinets - storage of medicines/chemicals
- Storage of medicines on high shelves
- Storage of chemicals on high shelves
- Support rails
- Hot water system thermostat installation
- Electrical safety switch installation
