OVERVIEW
On 18 April 2000 the first issue of Producer Price Indexes for Selected Service Industries, Australia (ABS Cat No. 6423.0) was released. It presented quarterly price index numbers for most industries within the transport and storage and property and business services industries up to the March quarter 2001. In June 2001 these indexes were consolidated into Producer Price Indexes, Australia (ABS Cat. no. 6427.0).
The ABS is currently undertaking a broad strategic program that will extend the scope of the Producer Price Indexes (PPIs) into the increasingly important services industries of the economy. As part of this program several new indexes for services industries will be published starting from the September quarter 2012. These include Veterinary services and Accommodation and food services. Additional indexes for other services industries will be progressively published as they are developed.
The PPIs currently contain price indexes for a range of services industries based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC). These include:
· Selected price indexes for the Output of the Accommodation and food services industries
· Selected price indexes for the Output of the Transport, postal and warehousing industries
· Selected price indexes for the Output of the Information media and telecommunications industries
· Selected price indexes for the Output of the Rental, hiring and real estate services industries
· Selected price indexes for the Output of the Professional, scientific and technical services industries
· Selected price indexes for the Output of the Administrative and support services industries
· Selected price indexes for the Output of the Public administration and safety industries (covering Class 7712 Investigation and security services)
· Selected price indexes for the Output of the Other services industries (covering Class 9533 Parking services)
PURPOSE
The indexes measure changes in the prices of the output of services industries. The indexes can be used for the following purposes:
· as important inputs into the Australian National Accounts by providing the basis for producing constant price estimates of the output of services industries
· inputs into broader measures of price change
· to aid industry and economic analysis
· use in contracts
· to make international economic comparison
· assess the impact of government policies
SCOPE
These indexes measure changes in the prices of selected Services industries classified to the following Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) 2006 divisions: Accommodation and food services industries, Transport, postal and warehousing industries, Information media and telecommunications industries, Rental, hiring and real estate services industries, Professional, scientific and technical services industries, Public administration and safety industries and Other services industries.
The indexes are compiled and published on a 'gross sector' basis, at all levels of aggregation. This means that transactions within an industry and between that industry and other industries are in scope.
DATA DETAIL
Conceptual framework
Services indexes are compiled on a gross sector basis. The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is excluded from prices used in compiling the indexes.
As services indexes are output indexes the valuation basis is basic prices. The basic price is the amount received by the service provider exclusive of taxes (less subsidies) on products, and transport and trade margins (where relevant).
The indexes are fixed weights indexes. The ANZSIC class indexes are aggregated to the relevant group, subdivision and division using weights derived from 2007-08 Input-Output production values, in combination with data from other ABS surveys and industry sources. The weights were revalued to reflect price levels in the reference base year, 2011-12=100.0

The first data published for the services industries was an experimental series in the ABS information paper, Price Index Developments (ABS Cat. No. 6422.0). This paper was released in March 1999 and contained indexes for only selected services industries. The ABS then published the first quarterly issue of Producer Price Indexes for Selected Service Industries (Cat. No. 6423.0) for the March quarter 2000 in April 2000. The time series for this publication commenced in the September quarter 1998. The data that was published represented activities at the Australia level and was classified according Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), 1993.
In June 2001 Producer Price Indexes for Selected Service Industries (Cat. No. 6423.0) was consolidated with the ABS publication Producer Price Indexes, Australia (ABS Cat. No. 6427.0). The industry classification for the PPIs was updated in accordance with the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification, 2006 edition (ANZSIC 2006) for the September quarter 2009. New weights for the Producer Price Indexes were derived using the 2007-08 Input-Output tables which were price updated to the June quarter 2012 and published in the September quarter 2012. New series for particular services industries have also been developed and will be published for the first time in the September quarter 2012.
