    NAME OF ORGANISATION

    OVERVIEW
    The collection of statistics for the radio and television services industries is planned to be undertaken three yearly. The collection was a census of employing businesses in the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) classes 9121-Radio Services and 9122 Television Services.

    PURPOSE
    The collection was conducted in response to government's need for financial information about the industries and to meet the requirements of the radio and television services industries.

    SCOPE
    The collection was a survey of businesses and organisations mainly engaged in the radio and television services industry. The scope of the collection was based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) class 9121 Radio Services; consisting of businesses/organisations mainly engaged in radio broadcasting. This class also includes the collection of news for radio services, and the production of radio programs, whether live or on tape or other recording medium, for own use and 9122 Television Services; consisting of businesses/organisations mainly engaged in television broadcasting. This class includes the production of television programs, whether live or on tape or other recording medium, for own use. This class also included the collection of news for television broadcasting.

    Classifications
    ANZSIC
    The radio and television services industries publication presents statistics classified according the Australian and New Zealand Industrial Classification (ANZSIC). Businesses were selected on the basis of their ANZSIC at the management unit level.

    Data are available at the ANZSIC class level.

    Business Size
    The publication contains two tables of data cross classified by employment size groupings for private radio and television broadcasters.

    Size groupings for private radio broadcasters:
    0-4 persons
    5-9 persons
    10-19 persons
    20-49 persons
    50-99 persons
    100 or more persons

    Size groupings for private television broadcasters:
    0-9 persons
    10-19 persons
    20-49 persons
    50-99 persons
    100-149 persons
    150-199 persons
    200 or more persons

    Broadcastors

    Public - broadcasters are government owned and obtain their income from government funding (excluding government subsidies). This funding includes parliamentary appropiration, liabilities assumed by government, and resources received free of charge.

    Community- broadcasters are non-profit, non-government organisations. They receive the majority of their money from the Federal Government via the Community Broadcasting Foundation (CBF): audience subscriptions are another major source of income. 'Community' means community of interest, geographical/residential (local area), and special interest.

    COLLECTION HISTORY
    Statistics for the radio and television services industries were first collected in respect of 1993-94 and 1996-97. Royalties, payments and income were considered to be non-operating expenses and income for all collections prior to 1996-97 collection. Consistent with the changes in ANA standards, from 1996-97 royalties expenses and income were treated as operating and so contribute to the derivation of industry gross product.
