    OVERVIEW
The Livestock Slaughtered Coverage Collection (LSCC) replaced the annual Livestock Slaughtered Survey (LSS) in 1997-98.

    PURPOSE
The purpose of this survey is to check the details of the smaller abattoirs not in scope of the monthly survey, providing information on changes in the operations of smaller abattoirs.
The survey consists of three questions: a time taken question, a comments question, and a question which asks for total number of livestock slaughtered. This latter question splits livestock into five types: cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and deer. The totals help ABS staff to judge whether the respondent should be included in the monthly survey.

    SCOPE
Smaller abattoirs and other slaughtering establishments which service both the domestic and export markets.
The very small abattoirs/slaughter houses include those that operate only on a seasonal basis or those where the numbers killed are so small that their impact on published monthly statistics is insignificant. Information from these smaller establishments is collected on an annual basis so that any changes in size can be monitored.
No formal distinction between 'small' and 'large' exists. A selection algorithm is under development.

    DATA DETAIL

    Conceptual framework
The purpose of this collection is to determine if the number of animals slaughtered (by category) reported by small size abattoirs has become large enough to add them to the regular collection vehicle.

    Main outputs
Returns will be individually reviewed to see if the reported data warrants the respondent being switched to the monthly Livestock Survey, from which output data would then be produced.

    Classifications
The classifications for type of animal slaughterings collected are:
    Cattle and Calves
    Sheep and Lambs
    Pigs
    Goats
    Deer

    Data items collected include:
    Number slaughtered

    Other concepts (summary)

    COLLECTION FREQUENCY

    Frequency comments
The collection is currently being run on an annual basis. In the future it may be run biennially or triennially.

    COLLECTION HISTORY
The annual Livestock Slaughtered Survey was a full survey conducted as a supplement to the main (monthly) Livestock Slaughtered Survey, which asked for data from smaller abattoirs. Data from this annual collection was then fed into the main collection in the form of monthly averages. In 1998 the survey was not approved by the Statistical Clearing House (SCH) on the basis that the contribution of the small abattoirs to estimates of livestock slaughtered was so small that it did not warrant the respondent load imposed. The SCH did recognise however that there was a need to maintain the frame of the monthly collection.

    DATA AVAILABILITY
    Yes

    Data availability comments
Data from this survey are not disseminated directly but form an input to the monthly Livestock Slaughtering Collection. The data collected are used to derive an estimate of average monthly farm kill of all small size establishments.

Responses to this collection are also analysed to determine any change in the operations of smaller abattoirs which would indicate the need to include them in the scope of the monthly collection.
