OVERVIEW
Australian National Accounts: National Income, Expenditure and Product (ABS Cat No. 5206.0) - Quarterly is a detailed and up-to-date presentation of the quarterly national accounts at both current prices and chain volume measures in original, seasonally adjusted and trend terms. Tables are grouped under the following headings: Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and associated statistics, expenditure on GDP tables, GDP account tables, industry gross value added tables, summary income, capital and external tables, household tables, general government tables, other tables, annual tables, revisions tables, additional tables available electronically.
PURPOSE
To provide an up-to-date picture of the performance of the Australian economy. Information is used as an input to the formulation of fiscal and monetary policy. Other uses of the quarterly national accounts include: broad indicator of economic activity; and a provider of input to various forms of economic modelling. Government departments, industry groups, universities and private researchers are among the users of the quarterly national accounts.
SCOPE
Scope and coverage include all Australian resident units engaged in productive activity (as defined by System of National Accounts 2008 (SNA08)).

Conceptual framework
The conceptual framework used in Australian National Accounts: National Income, Expenditure and Product (ABS Cat No. 5206.0) - Quarterly, is substantially based on the framework provided by the "System of National Accounts, 2008" (SNA08).
Main outputs
Data is collected in respect of the productive activity (as defined in SNA08) of all individuals, businesses and government units. A wide range of national accounting aggregates, relating to production, income, expenditure and capital accumulation, are published. Major aggregates are presented in original, seasonally adjusted and trend terms, and in current prices and as chain volume measures. Estimates of production are broken down by industry (in chain volume terms only), while income and expenditure data are separately identified for the household sector and the general government sector.

COLLECTION HISTORY
Quarterly national accounts estimates were first published in December 1960. In 1971, quarterly constant price, seasonally adjusted estimates were published for the first time in Australia. Chain volume measures replaced constant price estimates in the September quarter 1998 issue. SNA08 was implemented in the September quarter 2009.
