NAME OF ORGANISATION
Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)
OVERVIEW
Presents estimates of the direct contribution of the tourism industry to the Australian economy within the context of a satellite account linked to the Australian System of National Accounts.
PURPOSE
The publication shows the contribution of tourism to major economic aggregates, such as gross domestic product (GDP), as well as details by type of visitor, what products were purchased by tourists and which industries supplied those products. In addition, data on employment in tourism industries and visitor numbers is presented. The Tourism Satellite Account provides users with a macro-economic framework to conduct analyses of tourism impacts on the economy.
SCOPE
Tourism is not defined as an industry in ABS classifications. However the tourism satellite account uses a model to measures the magnitude of the tourism 'industry' so it can be compared on a consistent basis with other industries in the economy. Key measures are tourism GDP and tourism employment.
