OVERVIEW
Information was collected from an adult member, in respect of all persons aged 50 years and over, in each selected household. The questions included:
- Need for assistance or supervision with personal care or mobility inside or outside the house, due to any health condition or functional disability
- Whether the person has a driving licence, and the extent and frequency of driving habits
- Access to and use of public transport
- Sources of income
- Whether the person undertakes voluntary work, or provides unpaid assistance to persons outside the household
- Participation in various physical and social activities (eg walking, gardening, community and church activities)
- Use of facilities and household equipment (eg mobile telephone, answering machine, microwave oven and personal computer).
PURPOSE
The data will be used by Queensland Health; the Task Force on Healthy Ageing Strategy (Department of the Premier and Cabinet); the Office of Ageing (Department of Families, Youth and Community Care); the Office of Sport and Recreation; and the Department of Training and Industrial Relations.
The information will be used to develop strategies to celebrate positive aspects of ageing for the International Year of Older People in 1999, and for programs on healthy ageing initiatives. It will also provide information on the use older people are making of modern technology.
