OVERVIEW
Survey was conducted in 1981, 1984 and 1988 and details surrounding the conception, methodology, purpose etc. of these surveys are scant.
PURPOSE
The data was collected by mail questionnaire, from a sample of approximately 5,000 business establishments across Australia. The survey will collect information relating to;
- the number of payrolls;
- the frequency of payment; and
- the amount of earnings.
Results from the survey was used by the National Accounts Branch of the ABS for the purpose of producing seasonally adjusted aggregates of wages, salaries and supplements for inclusion in the Gross Domestic Product item of the Australian National Accounts.
SCOPE
All wage and salary earners who received pay in any period ending within the quarter were represented within the survey, except;
- members of the permanent Australian Defence Forces;
- employees of enterprises in the private sector engaged primarily in agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting;
- employees in private households employing staff;
- employees of overseas embassies, consulates etc.; and
- employees based outside Australia.
