ABS Seeks Public Comment on 2006 Census Products and Services

The Australian Bureau of Statistics today invited public comment on proposals for products and services from the next Census of Population and Housing to be held in August 2006.

The information paper, 2006 Census of Population and Housing, ABS Views on Census Output Strategy, describes a strategy for providing products and services from the nation's largest statistical collection to business, community and other users of census data.

Proposals include a comprehensive Internet based release strategy to disseminate census data, in addition to modifications to the previous 2001 census output strategy which are designed to make use of emerging technology.

ABS clients and other users of census data are invited to comment on any aspect of the output strategy, using a questionnaire included with the information paper. The questionnaire can also be completed on-line from the ABS web site by following this link.

Submissions are sought by 15 December 2004.

Responses to the questionnaire will be used in preparing more detailed plans for 2006 census products and services and these will be presented for user and public comment in mid 2005.

The census is the largest statistical operation undertaken by the ABS and generates an enormous amount of valuable information which helps planners, policy makers and researchers.

Products and services from the 2006 census will be designed to assist and encourage informed decision making, research and discussion by government, business and the community.
