EXPLANATORY NOTES INTRODUCTION 1 This publication contains preliminary estimates of the resident population of Western Australia by age and sex at 30 June 2000. Data have been compiled for Statistical Divisions, Subdivisions and Statistical Local Areas (SLAs). 2 The estimated resident population (ERP) is the official ABS estimate of the Australian population. METHODOLOGY 3 The total population of each SLA is based on results of the 1996 Population Census and calculated for post-census dates by a linear regression model which uses independent indicators of population change such as dwelling approvals and Medicare enrolments. These intercensal estimates of the resident population are revised each time a population census is taken. 4 The age and sex estimates were prepared using the cohort component method. Post-censal age distributions were obtained by advancing the age and sex estimates for 30 June 1996 to the next age, subtracting deaths and adding births and net estimated inter-regional and overseas migration. Inter-regional and overseas migration was estimated from the analysis of arrivals and departures data and individual SLA profiles derived from the 1996 Census. 5 Other relevant information is also used to supplement the estimates from the regression model when preparing the published estimates. This includes information on significant local factors which might have caused population changes during the relevant period. 6 After each Census final estimates for the preceding intercensal period are calculated by incorporating an additional adjustment (intercensal discrepancy) to ensure that the total intercensal increase at each age agrees with the difference between the estimated resident population at the two respective census dates. 7 A detailed explanation of the concept of estimated resident population, as adopted by the ABS for official population estimates, is contained in the ABS Information Paper: Population Estimates: Concepts, Sources and Methods (Cat. no. 3228.0). GEOGRAPHIC BOUNDARIES 8 The geographic areas used in this publication are defined in the Australian Standard Geographical Classification, 2000 Edition (Cat. No. 1216.0). The Cities of Perth, Fremantle, Joondalup, Stirling, Wanneroo and Albany comprise a number of SLAs. 9 SLAs are marked (C) for City, (T) for Town or (S) for Shire. The names and designations are as they existed at 1 July 2000. 10 From 1 July 2000, the Shire of Swan became a City and an area of 1 ha was transferred from Kalamunda (S) to Swan (C). RELIABILITY 11 All SLA estimates are shown to the nearest person, although accuracy to this level is not claimed and should not be assumed.
