Estimated Resident Population (ERP)
OVERVIEW
The Estimated Resident Population (ERP) is an estimate of the Australian resident population. It is produced by updating the previous quarter's estimate by adding the components of natural increase, net overseas migration and net interstate migration.
Natural increase refers to the excess of births over the number of deaths.
Net interstate migration refers to the difference between the number of Australian residents who move to a given state or territory from elsewhere in Australia and the number of residents who leave that state or territory to live elsewhere in Australia.
Net overseas migration refers to the difference between permanent and long-term arrivals to Australia, and permanent and long-term departures from Australia.
Estimates of the Australian population are used for a number of important public purposes including determining the number of seats for each state and territory in the House of Representatives and the allocation of Commonwealth funding for the states/territories and local governments. Population estimates are also used to weight many ABS surveys and are used by the private sector for market and academic/demographic research.
Overseas visitors in Australia are excluded from this calculation.
