SOUTH AUSTRALIA
MEDIAN AGE
- At June 2017, South Australia (SA) had a median age (the age at which half the population is older and half is younger) of 40.0 years. This was the second highest of all states and territories, behind Tasmania at 42.2 years. The median age of males in 2017 was 38.9 years compared with 41.1 years for females.
- The median age in Greater Adelaide (38.7 years) was six years lower than in the rest of the state (44.7).
- The SA2s with the highest median ages in 2017 were popular retirement destinations on the Fleurieu and Yorke Peninsulas. The coastal SA2s of Goolwa - Port Elliot and Victor Harbor on the Fleurieu Peninsula had the highest median ages of 58.3 and 57.8 years respectively. On the Yorke Peninsula, SA2s with the highest median ages were Yorke Peninsula - South (56.1 years), Yorke Peninsula - North (54.7) and Moonta (54.6).
- The APY Lands in the state's north had the lowest median age of all SA2s in the state, at 27.6 years. This was followed by Munno Para West - Angle Vale (28.6) and Davoren Park (28.8) on the northern fringe of Greater Adelaide, and inner-city Adelaide (29.4).

SEX RATIO
- At June 2017, the sex ratio (the number of males per 100 females) in SA was 97.7. This was the lowest sex ratio of all states and territories in Australia.
- Greater Adelaide had more females than males (with a sex ratio of 96.7) while in the rest of SA there were more males than females (101.1).
- The SA2 with the highest sex ratio in SA was Outback (165.4 males per 100 females), followed by Grant (131.7) in the state's south-east and the mining town of Roxby Downs (130.8).
- The SA2s with the lowest sex ratios in 2017 were Warradale (86.8 males per 100 females) a southern suburb of Adelaide, and Toorak Gardens (88.3) in Adelaide's east.

AGE AND SEX DISTRIBUTION
- The age distribution of the population in Greater Adelaide varies most from the rest of the state for the young adult population. Greater Adelaide had a higher proportion of its population aged 20 to 39 years at June 2017 (28%) as compared to the rest of the state (21%). This is indicative of young adults moving to the capital city for employment or education purposes.
