WA building work up, exceeding national trend

The value of building work undertaken in Western Australia during the March quarter 1999 increased 5.5% over the December quarter, in seasonally adjusted terms, exceeding the national figure of 0.3%. All other States and Territories exhibited negative growth, except for South Australia and the ACT.

New residential building work continues to show strong growth, with the value of building work done(original series) rising to $492.0 million, the highest level for four years. Only Victoria and the ACT exhibited higher growth.

There has been a significant increase in the value of building work commenced on shops over the past six months, with the value for the six months ending March 1999 being $270.5 million. This is substantially greater than annual figures for the past three financial years, which have averaged $156.9 million per annum.

The increase is principally the result of two large developments at Cannington and Booragoon.



Total building work done in WA for the quarter was valued at $793.2 million, of which $246.8 million was for non-residential work. This compares to $767.0 million and $275.7 respectively for the same quarter of 1998.
