OVERVIEW
The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) is a national independent statutory body established under the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Act 1986. HREOC administers Commonwealth anti-discrimination legislation – the Racial Discrimination Act 1975, the Sex Discrimination Act 1984, the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Age Discrimination Act 2004 – as well as the human rights responsibilities under the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Act 1986.
HREOC provides leadership on human rights and ensures that Australians have access to an independent complaint handling process and benefit from human rights education, promotion and monitoring and compliance activities. HREOC aims to "foster greater understanding and protection of human rights in Australia and to address the human rights concerns of a broad range of individuals and groups".
Part of HREOC's responsibilities include handling complaints involving allegations of racial discrimination and human rights breaches. Complaint statistics for each business year are contained in HREOC Annual Reports.
