The median age of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners was lower than the median age of non-Indigenous prisoners (31.3 years compared to 35.4 years).
Prisoners aged 24 years or under comprised 24% (2,368 prisoners) of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners, compared to 14% (3,744 prisoners) of all non-Indigenous prisoners. Prisoners aged 40 years or more comprised 22% (2,205 prisoners) of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners, compared to 36% (9,497 prisoners) of all non-Indigenous prisoners. (Table 20)
