AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS)
NAME OF COLLECTION
Survey of Employment Arrangements and Superannuation (SEAS)
OVERVIEW
The Survey of Employment Arrangements and Superannuation (SEAS) was a household survey conducted throughout Australia from April to June 2000. The survey collected information from approximately 25,000 individuals aged 15 to 69 years.
The aims of the SEAS were to describe the diversity of employment arrangements in the Australian workforce, (focussing on characteristics considered important in identifying newer and emerging working arrangements), and to obtain high quality information on people's superannuation coverage. The survey information is relevant to employment or labour market policy and retirement income policy.
Information collected about working arrangements includes employment type, job duration, expected job duration, hours worked, working patterns and some work preferences.
Information about superannuation arrangements includes the types of contributions being made to people's superannuation, the amount being contributed, the amount accrued in superannuation, and the benefit structure and fund type of each account.
Information collected on retirees includes whether they had received a lump sum recently, the amount of the lump sum received, and whether any of the lump sum was rolled over.
Data items contained within these topics are capable of being cross classified with Data items relevant to migrants and ethnicity.
The most recent SEAS has been redeveloped and renamed as Survey of Employment Arrangements, Superannuation and Retirement (SEARS) and was conducted from April to July 2007. Additional information was collected for SEARS on retirement and retirement intentions and balancing work and caring responsibilities. Data from SEARS is expected to be released early 2008.
