Grape production in NSW is concentrated in the Murrumbidgee, Murray and Hunter Statistical Divisions.
Grape production continues to grow as does the value of grapes produced. Over the last six seasons, the area of bearing vines has more than doubled.
Data for 2001-02 indicate there were 34,000 hectares of bearing vines in NSW; a further 3,400 hectares had been planted but were not yet bearing fruit. A record 452,000 tonnes of grapes were produced and most (92%) were grown for winemaking.
Four varieties of grapes accounted for just under 59% of all production: chardonnay (82,000 tonnes), shiraz (78,000 tonnes), semillon (53,000 tonnes) and cabernet sauvignon (53,000 tonnes). White grape production (247,000 tonnes) exceeded red grape production (206,000 tonnes).
