The ABS is conducting a 'fitness for purpose' review of the Survey of Motor Vehicle Use (SMVU). The objective of this review is to critically assess the SMVU to ensure survey data aligns with users' needs, ie. the right data items with the right statistical attributes (eg, reliability, frequency of data collection, etc). The review will also seek to address more general transport data needs that the SMVU may be able to meet.
This paper is the final output from Phase 1 of this SMVU review. It documents stakeholders issues with the current SMVU data, and details how they are currently using the data. This paper has been compiled following consultation with a range of stakeholders. This paper also recommendations a range of investigations to be carried out during phase 2. Phase 2 will involve identifying options to address the issues outlined in this paper. The review team will consult with stakeholders and the Transport Statistics Users Group (TSUG) during phase 2 before finalising the review recommendations.
A Terms of Reference paper for this SMVU review is also available.
