AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS)

NAME OF COLLECTION

The Child Care Survey (CCS)

OVERVIEW

The Child Care Survey (CCS) is conducted every three years as a supplement to the Labour Force Survey. It collects information about formal and informal child care arrangements for children aged 0 to 12 years. The most recent (CCS) was conducted in 2005.

The major aim of the CCS is to collect information about the use of, and need for, child care for children 0 to 12 years of age. Data are also used to monitor changes in the way families balance work and family responsibilities and to establish and monitor child care use patterns.

Topics covered by the CCS include characteristics of families, parents and children, child care arrangements for families and children, requirements for formal care in previous four weeks, child care arrangements for each type of care, cost of child care, child care arrangements for specific types of care and demographic details. Information is also collected on the use of the Child Care Benefit and the income and working arrangements of parents with children 0-12 years of age. Data items within these topics are capable of being cross classified with Data items relevant to migrants and ethnicity.
