Increased cattle disposals boosts gross value

Widespread dry conditions saw livestock producers turn-off large numbers of stock in 2013-14, resulting in a 12 per cent increase in gross value of total livestock disposals to $14.6 billion according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

"The gross value of cattle and calf disposals increased 11 per cent to $8.5 billion, with slaughter numbers reaching highs not seen since 1978-79," said Katie Hutt from the ABS.

"For sheep and lambs, the gross value of disposals also increased, up 19 per cent to $2.6 billion," said Ms Hutt.

Favourable winter weather conditions in the west of Australia increased production of both wheat and barley, resulting in gross value increases of 7 per cent to $7.7 billion and 19 per cent to $2.4 billion respectively.

Less than favourable growing conditions in the east of Australia resulted in reduced production and gross value for canola and sorghum.

Preliminary data from the 2013-14 Value of Agricultural Commodities Produced Collection are released at national, state and territory level. Final data will be released in mid-2015.
