A new ABS socio-economic profile of our state

To assist South Australians know more about our State, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has today released a new compendium publication South Australia: A Statistical Profile 2001 (ABS Catalogue No 1368.4).

The South Australian Regional Director for the ABS, Mr Ian Crettenden, said the new profile presented the state from a variety of perspectives; its social environment, education, labour force, primary industry activity, manufacturing, mining, commerce and trade, aquaculture and finance.

"Often people need quick access to a broad range of information about South Australia, ranging from its history, population, and economy to its cultural life and contribution to the national picture, " he said.

"This new compendium provides a diverse range of information all in the one document. It is an invaluable resource for all decision makers and a must for any personal reference collection as it meets the information needs of both specialist and general readers alike.

"In this first edition there is a special chapter on Information Technology which highlights the use of computers and the Internet by private households and farm holders in South Australia. There is also an overview which presents South Australia's contribution to the national socio-economic fabric and the a summary of the main points of the publication."

  • in 1999-2000, the main sources of international visitors to South Australia were the United Kingdom (20.2 %), New Zealand (10.3 %), the United States of America (9.6 %), and Singapore (9.3 %)
  • the median age of parents with children born during the year shows a slow but steady increase, with the median age of mothers increasing from 29.1 years in 1993 to 29,8 years in 1998
  • In the 12 months to 30 June 1999, South Australia's estimated resident population rose 0.4 % to 1,493,074 and comprised 7.8% of the national population
  • at 30 June 2000, there were 79 recognised public hospitals in South Australia of which 13 are within metropolitan Adelaide
  • Australian Rules Football was the most popular spectator sport in South Australia, attracting 402,6000 persons (33.7 %)
  • In 1998-99, the value of aquaculture production was $180 million, increasing by more than three times from the 1996-97 value of $49.5 million
  • during 1999-2000, the value of all building construction work completed in South Australia was $1,813.8 million, a 24.5 % increase on 1998-99
  • the retail industry in South Australia increased total turnover by 5.1 % from $10,256.7 million in 1998-99 to $10,784.4 million in 1999-2000
  • the proportion of households with home Internet access rose from 13 % in 1998 to 20 % in 1999, an increase of approximately 41,000 households
  • South Australia's registered motor vehicles accounted for 8.4 % of the national total in 1999, with 562 registered motor vehicles per 1,000 population, 10 % higher than the national average of 511
  • South Australia was the largest contributor to the national production of lemons and limes, producing 10,225 tonnes or 35 % of the total Australian production
