The pattern of land use in South Australia indicates that vast tracts of land have no attributed land use and these include areas of saltbush, scrub, native vegetation and non-arable land.

An estimated 53.5 million hectares or 54% of South Australia's land area was used for agricultural activity in 2001-02. Just under 8% of South Australia's agricultural land was used for cropping.
