Ascot residents recorded the highest average income in Queensland in 2009-10, according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

ABS Director of the Rural and Regional National Statistics Centre, Lisa Conolly said the Estimates of Personal Income for Small Areas publication uses data from the Australian Taxation Office to provide a breakdown of information such as personal income by wage and salary, investment, superannuation and annuities.

"The top five earning regions in Queensland all fall in the Greater Brisbane region with Ascot the highest with an average of $90,945, followed by Hamilton on $90,900, Bulimba on $74,206, Hawthorne on $73,928 and Bardon on $73,579.

“Outside of Greater Brisbane the highest average income was recorded in a mining region near Mackay called Moranbah which averaged an income of $75,662 per annum.

“For the rest of Queensland the highest average total incomes were in Broadsound with $64,814 and the Central Highlands with $61,361.

“Overall, the average total income for the state of Queensland is $45,844 which is lower than the national average of $48,530.

“Australia’s highest earners are those in the Melbourne suburb of Toorak who earn an average of $132,252 per year.

“Almost 38 per cent (or 193 in number) of Queensland's regions had average total incomes above the state average of $45,844. Of this group, 62 per cent were located within the Brisbane metropolitan area.

“From a state and territory perspective, the Australian Capital Territory recorded the highest average total income of $58,034, followed by Western Australia on $53,397.
