Accommodation up across entire sector in 1998 - ABS Accommodation capacity in hotels, motels, serviced apartments, holiday flats, guests houses, caravan parks and other accommodation establishments has increased in the twelve months to December 1998 according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Across the sector, the number of rooms, units or sites increased by 4.6% while the number of accommodation establishments (excluding those with less than 5 rooms) increased by 4.4%. The largest growth occurred for serviced apartments with the number of rooms/units up by 26% and the number of establishments up by 14% over this period. Visitor hostels also had high growth in both capacity (up 18%) and number of establishments (up 23%). The number of letting entities for holiday flats, units and houses increased by 9%, leading to an increase in the number of flats, units or houses managed of 4%. Licensed hotels with five or more rooms were up 3% with number of guest rooms up 4%. Motels and guest houses with five or more rooms accounted for 35% of all types of accommodation establishments and provided the largest number of rooms/units. Their capacity increased slightly by 1%. Low growth also occurred over the twelve months to the end of December 1998 in the number of caravan parks (up 1%) and number of powered sites and cabins (up 2%).
