People living in Sydney's harbourside suburbs earn some of Australia's highest incomes, according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Mosman, on Sydney's North Shore, recorded the highest average total income in Australia in 2007-08 ($131,606) followed by Woollahra, in Sydney's east ($116,376).

Hunters Hill ($95,027), North Sydney ($83,997) and Ku-ring-gai ($82,195) round out the top five highest income areas in New South Wales.

Around 16% of regions in New South Wales recorded average total incomes above the state average ($46,480). Of these, all but 4 were located within the Sydney metropolitan area.

Outside of Sydney, highest average total incomes were recorded in Queanbeyan ($51,227) and part of Palerang in the state's south-east ($50,537), Singleton in the Hunter Valley ($49,780), and inner-city Newcastle ($47,375).

These data include income from wages and salaries, own unincorporated business, investment, and superannuation and annuities, but do not include government pensions and allowances.
