NAME OF COLLECTION

National Diabetes Register (NDR)

OVERVIEW

The National Diabetes Register (NDR) is an ongoing database that is the responsibility of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). It collects information about people who use insulin as part of their treatment for diabetes.

The objectives of the Register are to:

  • collect information about new cases of insulin-treated diabetes mellitus (ITDM)
  • provide a sampling frame for scientifically valid and ethically approved epidemiological and clinical studies of ITDM and Type 1 diabetes
  • monitor and report on the incidence of  ITDM and Type 1 diabetes
  • provide information to health service providers and planners at Commonwealth, state and local levels and assist in national diabetes monitoring

Data are provided by Diabetes Australia (who operate the National Diabetes Services Scheme) and the Australasian Paediatric Endocrine Group who collect information about children with diabetes.

SCOPE

The NDR includes all persons who began using insulin for management of diabetes on and since 1 January 1999, and who have consented to be included in the Register. These include persons using insulin to manage Type 1, gestational and Type 2 diabetes.
