AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS)
NAME OF COLLECTION
Labour Force Status and Other Characteristics of Migrants
OVERVIEW
The Labour Force Status and Other Characteristics of Migrants survey is used to monitor the labour market experience of migrants. The information collected enables an assessment of the labour market experience and other characteristics of persons who migrated to Australia during the 20 year period prior to the reference period of the survey, who were aged 15 years and over on arrival, and subsequently obtained permanent residency status. Information is also provided for people who were temporary residents that planned to stay in Australia for 12 months or more.
Objectives of the survey include assisting policy development and the monitoring of policy outcomes related, for example, to the provision of services for particular migrant groups.
A range of variables are collected under the broader categories of demographic details, education, qualifications and labour force experience and are capable of being cross classified with Data Items Relevant to Migrants.
The survey was first conducted in March 1984, again in 1987, 1990, 1993, 1996, 1999 and most recently in November 2004. Details appearing in this guide are based on the 2004 survey which contains revised data items from previous surveys. From 2004, the survey will be conducted every three years.
The 2004 survey sample includes 4,807 households.
The Labour Force Status and Other Characteristics of Migrants survey is conducted as part of the Monthly Population Survey, which comprises the Labour Force Survey (LFS) and, in most months, a supplementary survey topic.
