INTRODUCTION

This publication presents estimates of the financial performance of businesses and components of general government sector organisations involved in waste management services. The survey collected data covering the 2009-10 financial year. These data are compiled from a directly collected survey conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). This is the third ABS survey of waste management services with previous collections covering 2002-03 and 1996-97.

WHAT'S NEW IN THIS ISSUE

Users are advised not to make historical comparisons with previous iterations of this collection. This survey was not designed to support accurate estimates of change over time. Changes in frame, scope, industry classification and methodology have been introduced for 2009-10. In addition, there are new data items covering waste management activities, facilities operated and quantities of waste received, processed and transferred.
