MOTOR VEHICLES PER DWELLING - 2006 CENSUS
ACT, Queanbeyan and Australia
This article contains data from the 2006 Census of Population and Housing, conducted on 8 August 2006, and presents details on registered motor vehicles (excluding motorbikes and scooters) owned or used by residents at occupied private dwellings for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) , the Local Government Area (LGA) of Queanbeyan , and for Australia as a whole. For comparison, data from the 1996 and 2001 Censuses have also been included where available.
Motor vehicles per dwelling
For the ACT, Queanbeyan and Australia, the proportion of dwellings at which there were either two motor vehicles or at least three motor vehicles showed a steady increase from Census 1996 to Census 2006:
- The proportion of ACT dwellings with two motor vehicles increased from 36% to 39% and the proportion with three or more motor vehicles increased from 11% to 15%.
- The proportion of Queanbeyan dwellings with two motor vehicles increased from 34% to 37% and the proportion with three or more motor vehicles increased from 11% to 17%.
- For Australia as a whole, the proportion of dwellings with two motor vehicles increased from 34% to 37% and the proportion with three or more motor vehicles increased from 12% to 15%.
In contrast, the proportion of dwellings at which there were no motor vehicles or one motor vehicle declined from Census 1996 to Census 2006:
- The proportion of ACT dwellings with no motor vehicles decreased from 9% to 7%, and with one motor vehicle from 44% to 39%.
- The proportion of Queanbeyan dwellings with no motor vehicles decreased from 12% to 8%, and with one motor vehicle from 44% to 38%.
- For Australia as a whole, the proportion of dwellings with no motor vehicles decreased from 12% to 10%, and with one motor vehicle from 42% to 38%.

Average number of motor vehicles per dwelling
For the 2006 Census, 194,400 registered motor vehicles were reported as being garaged or parked at 115,320 occupied private dwellings in the ACT, giving an average of 1.7 vehicles per dwelling , compared to an average of 1.6 vehicles per dwelling for Census 2001. For the ACT, the number of motor vehicles reported has increased by around 18,850 (11%) over the five years to 2006. The average number of motor vehicles per dwelling in Queanbeyan has shown a similar increase , from 1.6 to 1.7 vehicles, with the number of vehicles reported increasing by 3,560 (19%) to 22,305 over the five years to 2006.
The ACT districts (Statistical Sub-divisions) showing the largest increases in the number of motor vehicles reported from Census 2001 to Census 2006 were Gungahlin-Hall, Belconnen and Tuggeranong.
