What figures in tourism - new ABS directory of statistics Australian tourism now has an up to date catalogue of statistics relating to tourism activity. The 1997 Directory of Tourism Statistics released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics updates a 1991 edition and has been expanded to include further sources of data, including private sector, not included in the earlier edition. The Directory is designed to provide tourism policy groups, operators, planners, academics and researchers with a comprehensive ready reference to available statistical data dealing with the sector. As such, it provides pointers to a wide range of tourism research, including many recent surveys and forecasts. The publication presents the following details of tourism related data sources: name of collection (or forecast); contact; purpose; description; data detail; geographic coverage; frequency; historical data; and products and services available. Some entries also contain examples of information available. The Directory also contains the latest information on tourism statistical standards and classifications for Australia, and descriptions of various ABS products and services. There are comprehensive indexes to assist users locate their area of interest. The Directory of Tourism Statistics (cat. no. 1130.0) is available from ABS bookshops.
